I was stirring a stiff sourdough batter today and I snapped one of my prized 20 year old olivewood spoons. I then thought about it, and I haven't really oiled them or paid them much mind in years. I have food safe mineral cutting board oil. But what is the best to way to rehydrate them, given that they have dried out much more than I thought they had? Maybe a light coating and pop them in a Ziplock for a week or so? Do they need more like a month? --Lisa |

Lisa, So if they've dried out to the point of splintering/cracking you can't save them. If it's short of that, I'd do two coats of mineral oil. Put one on and rub it in with a cheesecloth, and then let it air-try on top of a towel for 24 hours. And then do a 2nd coat. This is based on experience with other hardwoods, but I'm assuming that olivewood isn't that different. |

They aren't showing any splinters or cracks, which is why I was so surprised when the handle of the one I was using snapped clean off. I assume it was dried out and not flawed in some other way because it was so old that a flaw would have probably shown itself before now. |
