Post subject:  Updates on Blendtec vs Vitamix?

Mother's Day sales coming up... my blender is dying. Thinking about finally upgrading to either a Blendtec or Vitamix. Looking at pros and cons of each. Interested in what you all have experienced with yours. Thanks!!

Nice to hear from you again :!:
If you use the search function here for either device you should find plenty of info.
I have not used both but I have used the VitaMix for years, love it and had WONDERFUL customer service when a bearing fried. :D

Our blender died and we got a blentec since it was $200 cheaper and available on the shelf at Costco and our rebate cheque covered it. Hubby really likes it. I've yet to use it in the last 3 months even though I was always the one that wanted one. ;-)

I have the Vitamix pro-750. I love it, but I can't honestly say it replaces a food processor like they claim. It is a great blender though.

We have both -- first bought the BlendTec then years later the VitaMix. I think we bought both at Costco. The BlendTec pitcher started leaking from the bottom seal and they wanted $70 for a new pitcher. So, I made due for a few years with a slightly leaky pitcher and then sprung for a much more than $70 new blender, the Vitamix. From my research at the time (2+ years ago) it seemed that the VitaMix was more robust than the BT for making things like nut-butters etc. Both are loud and I plug my ears whenever I turn one of them on. The VM seems easier to operate than the BT. For making smoothies and the number of times he'll use it, I plan to give my BT to a son who's starting grad school in the fall.

I forgot to mention that the pre-set programs are worth the extra money IMO. I love that I can flip the switch and just let it do its thing rather than having to strand there and manually adjust the speed up and down. Plus, you can walk away and do other things. We did green smoothies every day for 2 years with ours. I'd still be doing that, but we've switched to oatmeal in the mornings as a cholesterol lowering strategy.

FWIW, I've had my Vitamix for more than 10 years now. I used it in the beginning for smoothies mostly. After that the novelty kind of wore off and it's been stored in the pantry.
Personally I think it's overkill for most blending and if I were doing it again I'd invest in something a lot less expensive.

Linda,

The Vitamix is a daily use item if, like me, you make lots of adobos and curry pastes and similar things. A regular blender won't do those. Or, like me, you could get a food grinder instead and save $300.

It really really is a "it depends" think. I had two different blenders before the VitaMix and felt that, for what I did, they did such a poor job that I either used a FP, did it by hand, or didn't make the recipe. I love my VM. I also use it for things like Adobo's, etc and it works great. Now, whether that is worth it is the kind of value judgement that is almost impossible to make; it is hard enough to know even after you own one, let alone for someone else.

That said, I want a food grinder too ...

Paul,

Not sure about Canada, but in the USA, Amazon now sells Preethi grinders.
