JB,

Yeah. We have a narrow, very deep drawer which is perfect for our tableware ... provided that we put it in sideways. This requires having a series of 8 3/4" drawer dividers, and the shortest ones I can find anywhere premade are 9". I suspect I'm going to need to design/build my own.

We had one in our last kitchen that was 6.5 inches wide. I finally put two dollar store plastic baskets in it. The serving pieces and dessert forks went in the back basket and the stuff that actually got used every day was in the front one. When there are only two people most of the time, it really is an insignificant amount of extra effort to grab place settings from a jumble. And you probably make it up by not having to sort when putting stuff away. The biggest thing is just to keep confusing things separated -- dessert forks from dinner forks and tablespoons from serving spoons (unless your tablespoons are small and more likely to be confused for teaspoons.)

Since we have place settings for around 20, we need to separate everything. It'll just have to wait for me to get my woodworking tools set up. Anyone have tips on creating your own drawer dividers? I'm just planning to make a "ladder" shaped set of dividers out of doorskin, but if someone has a tip for lower-effort creation, I'm all eyes.

I have been trying to picture this in my head and failing. We're talking forks, knives, etc, right? And by sideways do you mean up and down,i.e. upright? So you'd end up with something like a drawer that looks like the inside of a box that holds 12 wine bottles?

I really can't add to the solution, but just wanted to figure out what the goal was. My initial thought was tension rods, but they probably don't sell them that short.

The Container Store has various bins and baskets in sizes less than 8" wide. What are the dimensions of the drawer? I can't design without knowing the size.

Jean,

Picture a narrow (9"), very deep (front-to-back) drawer (22"), about 2.5" high. The cutlery goes in parallel to the front of the drawer, lying down. As opposed to perpendicular the way it would in a wide drawer.

As I said, if only the drawer was 1/4" wider, there are a number of drawer organizers I could just buy. But at 8 3/4" interior, nothing I can buy at a store fits.

Have you tried drawer organizers in office supply stores? Some are expandable.

And have a look here: https://www.pinterest.com/explore/drawer-dividers/
