With regard to thawing meats, etc.: I've found that I can thaw just about anything on my granite counter (or in a big cast iron skillet) in only two to three hours (turning it once). I often have a last minute inspiration and haven't anything ready to prepare so this practice saves me.

I use mine all the time to steam vegetables (broccoli, Brussels sprouts, green beans, peas, cauliflower, almost everything non starchy). Mine also gets used for making rice and steaming baby potatoes (usually before turning them into hash browns but we eat them steamed with butter too). That's on top of reheating leftovers and preheating my latte mugs. I probably use it and my toaster oven more than my oven.

That only works if you are home to do the thawing. I get home from work around 6:30 PM, and having something thaw on my counter until 9 or 10 pm won't help me with dinner. I do that when I think ahead, but a lot of time I use the microwave or a pot of cool water so we can eat at a reasonable hour.

We bought a 1.6 cuft. Kenmore at Sears for $120. Works reasonably well; not quite as nice as the Sharp, but then it's also half the cost. I'm glad I didn't proceed with the "fix it" approach, as it wouldn't have taken long to spend $120 on parts to fail to fix the old one.

Overally I'd give the Kenmore 3 out of 5. It looks fine, and works fine. However, the 1.6cuft is deceptive since it's taller rather than wider, leading to less useful space. And the glass plate doesn't quite fit, resulting in clunking when it turns.

I'm with you Lisa. My savior is food saver bags which lets me dunk my meat to defrost into a bowl of hot water. Steaks/chicken breasts/pork chops take about 15 minutes. I wish I was organized enough to plan ahead, but I'm not.
