Josh, our street is called Dr. row because the # of doctors that live on it. 3 houses have sold since I've lived here and all were razed (all 3 were custom built after 1980) and new huge ones built e.g. 5 car garages, etc. hence the "small" comment.

At one time our street was referred to as "Pill Hill" because of the number of doctors. They had all moved on when we arrived but the name hung around for quite a while so I'm told.

We have no choice but electric here, as well. My next stove will likely be a vintage one similar to this but with two ovens instead of the oven/drawer combo. Something wider and shallower that looks nice standing alone just fits the space here the best. Plus, I never have to worry about the motherboard dying on me.

If I were going for something modern, I'd go induction.

And you know what I think. I would love induction with one gas burner.

Mary,

I'm with you. DH has pointed out the Wolf modular system to me....I think that would be ideal. The only thing I miss is roasting peppers and toasting tortillas over gas. Well, that and being able to use my Emile Henry flame cookware on the stovetop.

We have gas & I do love it, except for the cleanup. We have an induction burner that is just one burner (about the size that they use on the Today show cooking segments). We use it more than the cooktop. It is really quick, responsive & easy cleanup.

Yeah, having gas during power outages is nice too. They don't happen often here, but when they have I've missed my gas stove and the ability to turn on my gas fireplace (too bad they don't have a manual light option!).

Nancy, if they're looking for reasonably-priced but not low-end (although obviously that's a relative term) appliances, I highly recommend Bosch. In the last several years we've had to replace my double ovens, dishwasher, and cooktop, and I've bought Bosch for all of them. Except for one thing about the oven lights (which I've ranted about previously here), they are awesome. And I've found the best prices (and usually with free shipping) at online sources like usappliance.com.

And FWIW, I had electric cooktops until a year ago, when my GE smooth cooktop cracked (3rd one to do it). I'd always wanted gas but assumed it would be too expensive to have a propane tank installed, etc. To my surprise, it cost less than $900 for the tank, installation, electricity and plumbing work, and about the same for the Bosch cooktop. Best $1800 we ever spent (as far as I'm concerned, anyway!).
