Oh, -30 in TO is very very rough, most people there do not have appropriate gear for those temps. Surprising number of people here don't either, much to my amazement, since although they are not a daily occurrence, -20 is quite common and plenty cold enough for appropriate clothing (which starts with a Canadian or Nordic made jacket…spend some money people, department stores with offshore labour do not understand real winter gear).

It was a BAD day to wear a skirt to work...do not know what I was thinking.

Carey - do you like the insert about Winnepeg and Mars temps being the same?

Yup. It hit -40 C here (-51 with the windchill) while we were away. Apparently some parts of the province hit temperatures that were colder than Mars. We came home to a balmy -32 last night. Our garage is regularly below freezing, so we'd need a heater to keep a fridge as well. People who keep fridges in their garages here don't run them over the winter. They are summer use only. So we have our extra one in the basement beside the upright freezer.

Good lord. That is so far out of my realm of experience I cannot even imagine it. It is still unseasonably warm here. As a friend of my put it "Florida is not participating in winter this year." I still have the ingredients for 2 pounds of toffee if it does dip down, and would like two solid weeks of "cold" so that I could hang a pancetta without it going bad.

Don't get me wrong, I am a warm weather girl and don't WANT to be very cold, but this extended heat without a break is fairly annoying.

Lisa, I think it's going to drop down into the 60's here through the weekend and first half of next week.

Jean & Carey, just curious. What kind of fuel to you use to heat your homes?

Weather channel says that tomorrow (Friday) and Tuesday it will be in the high 60's here as a high - other than that the 10 day forecast has us around 77 to 79. A slight improvement - it was 86 today!

Our furnace runs on natural gas. Heating in the winter is quite expensive so the hydro company (who we buy power from whether it's electric or gas) offers a balanced budget plan so it's averaged out into equal payments over the whole year. But our homes also tend to be well insulated to be more energy efficient too. It's getting the car warm after a day outside that is the worst! Thank goodness for heated seats! Plus our cars have block heaters so you plug them in to keep the battery warm enough to start. Most long term parking spots have spots to plug your car in.

Our summers tend to be beautiful though. At least that's what I keep telling myself...

Don't forget about us in the frozen plains of the Upper Midwest. It's not as cold in Fahrenheit, though. We may get down to -20 degrees Fahrenheit tonight. I'm chilling cookie dough on my back porch right now. It's 20 above there.
