I'm thinking about getting this. It is supposed to heat to 650 degrees in a short time and is at a decent price right now. It has plenty of good reviews.
Does anyone have any experience or thoughts about this?

Karen,

Well, Kenji liked it, which is pretty high praise. He also said that you're better off with a pizza stone and a broiler, but the Breville was the countertop pizza oven he liked best. And it's not exactly expensive.

Kenji also gives some advice on getting the most out of it: http://slice.seriouseats.com/archives/2 ... -oven.html

I have nothing to add other than incredulity at this item that showed on the same page.... http://www.williams-sonoma.com/products ... rc=AutoRel
Does anyone actually buy this?

For $40 master pastry chef Jean-Yves Charon should just make me a damn pizza.

I mean this is what comes of mystifying a dish to death. Nobody would have been so scared of flour, olive oil, and water that they would contemplate buying $10 wads of frozen dough back when most pizza was made buy master pastry Chef Boy-ar-dee.

I don't have any experience with the pizza maker, but I use and love the other Breville appliances I have (smart oven, coffee maker, panini press, kettle, espresso maker). They all work really well. If I had the counter space (and ate more pizza) I'd be tempted....

Wow, I was ready to dis any "counter top" pizza maker, but that actually looks pretty good and if it is hitting 650F then it will make a pretty decent pizza. No, real pizza ovens, the wood or coal fired sort are bit over the 650F mark, but that number works pretty well and doesn't take forever to kick out your meal. The Weber/KettlePizza setup, my stone hits the 650F to 700F, while the air over it is hotter than that, so the Breville is pretty close.

Price tag is kind of there too. Oh well, if you love the pizza, you do whatcha gotta do.

I second the Breville in general recommendation. I have the non-convection Smart Oven and love it. And am getting the Sous Chef food processor as an early birthday present this week (my KA FP frustrations finally pushed me over the edge). So please do let us know how the pizza maker works!

And as far as that crazy dough, I think W-S appeals to two groups of people. Cooking enthusiasts who like a lot of their products and who are savvy enough to buy them there only when on sale or else truly not available anywhere else (that would be me), and people who have way more money than they know what to do with. That would be those who buy prepared dough or the crazy expensive baked goods and desserts, etc. they sell. But you gotta give them credit (W-S, I mean) -- if people are willing to fork over a ton of dough ( ) for products that have an enormous profit margin, that's a nice bonus for the bottom line. Right?

Emilie

p.s. And FWIW, the W-S outlets are nirvana. Seriously.
