JB,

I thought of that, and may still do it, but there's no way I could do that for under $20. The skewers alone (for the size I'm looking at) would run around $40, and then there's the cost of the container. I like the lacquered look, or perhaps even a glass vase.

I'm still noodling this one over...

FWIW, I've used the Kapoosh at other people's houses, and it seemed to work OK.

Of course, I'm a big fan of Make Your Own. Only requires $40 in hardwood, a half-gallon of glue, a table saw and about 140 clamps. I'd take a picture of my custom alderwood knife block, but I'm feeling too tired to get it down off the ceiling. ;-)

I got my knife block, and I love it! I'll agree with CI that the packaging was sub-optimal, but the block is very sturdy with a wonderfully small footprint. And, you simply remove some of the bamboo skewers so they don't pull up when take out a knife. I've got five Shuns and a Wusthof boning knife in there. It's perfect.
