Way back in 2008 CI recommended the OXO Good Grips Magnetic Locking Can Opener.
Does anyone have a better idea? THANKS :!: :o

I love my Swing-A-Way (I have 2) and you can find them on Amazon. One of the ones I have is about 15 years old but boy, it's solid and heavy.

Edited to add that I did have to replace the older of the 2 a few years ago and found one in a Hardware store of all places. I think they're more available than it appears, just not in mass merchandise places like BBB etc.

I have the oxo smooth edge one. It takes a bit to get used to getting it on the can properly, and feeling for the little extra give that let's you know that it has gone all the way around, and using the little pinchers to get the lid up. Once you get this down though it's ok.

I have a starfrit one at work. I like it much less, even though it is more intuitive to use.

I bought a Kitchenaid last year and pitched it less than a year later, it no longer was openning cans, seems to have dulled. I bought the starfrit, it's okay but I'm looking for a new one too.

I have a manual Swingaway that I have had since college, '77 or '78! Granted, I don't use as many canned goods as a family, but I am amazed that the rubber handle covers don't even show a hint of wear (I bet that has changed!). The mechanism also shows no signs of looseness, and the chrome has just a little rust inside if the handle. I got the Oxo smooth edge when they first came out with one that turned vertical, rather than horizontal, which was very awkward (remember those?). I use that for my coconut milk, and anything else I want to scrape out and not ruin the rubber scraper. But the old style opens much faster.

Wino,

I have the Swing-a-way with heavy rubber padded handles. Lemme see if I can find a listing ... here:

http://www.amazon.com/Swing-A-Way-Ergon ... B007ICNBIQ

This replaced several other can openers, including the Oxo, which we were unhappy with. Been in use for more than 5 years now. Feels more "solid" than other manuals I've had ... I think they use heavier steel, which means that it doesn't "flex" in your grip.

We've always used Swing-a-ways in my family. I'm pretty sure my Mom's is of a similar vintage to pepperhead's. Mine was purchased around 1990. Both are still going strong.
