Great news,

Our local steel shop has 2/8" scrap A36 mild steel. They will cut to size for $28.51. Baking steel is in my sights.

Fuzzy,

How did you remove the oil residue on the surface of your steel plate?

Tim,

Given that the entire plate was rusty, I had to do the whole surface with a wire brush on an angle grinder. Then I got the last of it off with dish soap.

If you're not grinding the whole thing, I'd recommend just using a stronger detergent.

I still want to also try an aluminum plate. I think it would work as well, and it would be somewhat lighter and rust-proof.

I have four pieces of sheet metal attached to my wall (because who doesn't). I took them to the car wash and used the degreaser setting on the wand to clean them off.

backsplash?

I bought the steel. I actually bought 2 since our friends who were here last night loved the idea too (having pizza with us) and my parents will be in NY next weekend and can bring it home. It would have been an extra $49 to ship them to Canada and with the exchange falling I didn't want to spend the extra bucks just to get it here.

Fuzzy,

I used to work the graveyard shift and it gave me strange ideas. Ideas like, "I need to take four 2'x4' sheets of metal, paint them black, and attach them to my wall with 1/2-inch furring strips. Then I need to put on magnets, lots of magnets."

Your kid is going to turn into an accountant, just to spite you.

Oh wow, I love that idea, though not painted, probably with a patina.
