Our oven dates from I think the late 1970's. It's a very basic gas oven, 100% mechanical, small, and indestructible.

Recently, part of the oven gasket (the one which goes around the edge of the door) broke off. This means that heat is not leaking out of the oven and making the stove knobs very, very hot. It also prevents the oven from getting over 450F.

I talked to an appliance place about getting a new gasket, but they need a model name & number and wouldn't talk to me otherwise. That information hasn't been legible on this oven for at least 15 years.

Ideas?

Look under the lid, and on the back of the appliance, if you can move it out of place. There's usually a plaque riveted on somewhere for the repair guys. Other wise, post a pic and see if we can guess.

Josh, My recollection is you are in a rented apartment??? Any chance your landlord would get a new stove?? Would any of the new stoves fit in the space?

Janet,

We just talked him into re-doing the bathroom after 3 years of nagging. I don't want to push our luck with the kitchen, yet.

Besides, it seems very wasteful to throw away a working stove just because the gasket is broken.

Haven't found a name/model yet. Have considered just buying some braided fiberglass rope and screwing it on, except that the stuff is so darned expensive.

Gaskets are normally glued with a high temp sealant, never screwed. Post photo, I'm sure one us can help or, take the photo to your repair shop. Heat, carbon monoxide, and health have a tenuous relationship that deserves loving care - Happy valentines Day from all of us!! :D

Maybe you should check the junkyards for a replacement door. Seems like a much easier repair.
