Emilie,

It was the only part of British school lunches I have fond memories of. Hot chocolate or vanilla custard over chocolate or vanilla cake, served in a bowl (chocolate was best). Made me actually eat the rest of the (rather horrifying) lunch so I could have some. The custard is thinner when hot than the cold stuff sets up to, and turns it all into a saucy pudding.

...and everyone knows you can't have your pudding if you don't eat your meat.

Yup. Gristly little bangers, mince pies, fish sticks (my fav actually), and assorted jellied/pickled seafood items were common....and no dessert without a clean plate!
