We have an excellent bakery that sells tasty cupcakes for $2.50 each. I buy them for birthday parties sometimes. I tried another bakery that sold for the same price and they were aweful. Grocery store ones here are ick.

Make sure they're fresh. Even quality expen$ive ones can become stale. Be sure to ask when they were made and ask for taste. Learned the hard way about this!

I know this was first posted a while back, but feel like chiming in, since I can't sleep at the moment.
I like making my own, and to gauge myself, I'll buy a few from a reputable Cup Cake shop.
Price that I usually pay is about $3 to $4 each. I have no problem paying $5 to $7 if it's just me.
Last June (2013) for my grand daughter's birthday we got a cupcake birthday cake from Safeway's Bakery. First time for everything. Freshness is always key and they made the cakes (vanilla and chocolate) that morning, frosted it an hour before we got it. I was impressed with the texture and flavor. Solid yummy, simple to portion for the guests. It was BETTER than the expensive specialty shops.
Again, freshness is key.
