I just got a call from my friend Scott who runs a popular cooking demonstration program at our local library. (Libraries like Telluride are unique in the programs they offer, because they have very large budgets.) I've presented at this program (held monthly) a few times.

Well, they flew in the author of Cookies for Grownups to do an evening presentation tomorrow complete with wine pairings.

I could hear the slight panic in Scott's voice when he told me Kelly (the author) slipped on our famous Telluride ice yesterday and broke her ankle in three places. She's scheduled for surgery this afternoon.

I knew immediately why Scott called. He asked me if I'd be willing to to take over her program and bake all the cookies, while she Skype's in from the hospital. Needless to say, I said I would. Thank God I don't have anything on the docket for the next few days.

Andy's bringing home a copy of her book this evening.

As I said, only in Telluride...

Amy

Wow, I wish I could come! I have been in the library in Telluride once. I went there to read while everyone else was skiing because I had too many margaritas the night before. I forgot what drinking at elevation does to me.

Anyway, good luck Amy!

Karen

That reminds me how elevating drinkin' can be :o  :!:

Wine & cookies - excuse me while I toss mine... :?

Please let me know the proposed combos and the results.

After writing the above I read all 8 Amazon reviews and while I remain skeptical, apparently I have to broaden my definition of 'cookie' - - -

Looking forward to your review -- something about the antipasto cookie...

Wow! Good luck Amy. Seems this more of a cooking rescue than baking given the Amazon book description. Will be interested on your feedback.

Well, it seems I was wrong...she broke her ankle into somewhere in between six and eight places, and it's a spiral fracture. I know the surgeon, and while he's not the orthopedic I recommend (after two surgeries myself with a different surgeon in the same practice) he's very good. She's in surgery right now. No doubt she's getting at least one plate. (I've got two...left shoulder and right wrist.) I'll get a chance to talk with her tomorrow morning (doped up on morphine and all) to understand how she wants the program to run. Based on what I've learned about the type of fracture she has, I think she'd be extremely lucky to be able to Skype in on the presentation. Looks like I've got to read her book tonight cover-to-cover.

I also just spoke with the publisher, and I'll be making six different cookies...four savory and two sweet. The recipes are being scanned to send to me this afternoon. I think I'll test run one of them to figure out how to adapt to altitude.

You need to dunk a biscotti into some Vin Santo and you will change your tune. Best done while watching the sun set over Mt. Etna.
