Has anyone tried this cocoa powder? My absolute favorite, El Rey, is suddenly impossible to find - Apparently, they're not producing it at the moment, and who knows if and when they will again.

I've already tried most cocoa powders, including Pernigotti, Callebaut, Cacao Barry Extra Brute, Droste, Scharffen Berger, etc., etc., and nothing has ever come close to El Rey. I'm heartbroken.

Hey Meryl,
That's odd. I fairly recently bought some at your recommendation...maybe a month or two ago on chocosphere. I hope you find it.

I haven't opened mine, so I don't know how good it is yet. Want me to send it to you?

I'm in agreement with Meryl about El Rey...it's great. I've never heard of Chocovic. Who produces it?

I'll send you an email in an hour or so - I'm just about finished cooking dinner - do you believe it? It's 11:40 PM here! (I can't get the time settings to show correctly on this site).

I think I'm in heaven.

Hey Amy,

Chocovic is a Spanish company - I think they originated in Barcelona, and I believe Callebaut acquired them several years ago . I've only seen their cocoa powder on Chocosphere.

Amy,
Here's some info I found on the Chocovic site. (I tried two of their chocolates several years ago - Guaranda 71%, Ecuador - liked it a lot. Ocumare 71%, Venezuela - hated it).

I have had their bar chocolates in Barcelona and liked them, but haven't tried cooking with them.

Has anyone tried Rodelle? Costco here started carrying it instead of Fry's (which is basically the only brand other than generic at most grocery stores) and I'm curious about if people like it.

Only tangentially related, BBC (or maybe it is CNN) has been doing an on-going report about child labor used for harvesting cacao in Africa. They are equating buying chocolate to blood diamonds. Various manufacturers have been trying to verify the sources and limit purchases from disreputable suppliers. I suppose that might effect high end chocolate being produced by socially conscious businesses.
