I offered to bake a cake for my friends birthday next week, even though I am rather a reluctant baker. I want to make something a bit different, feminine, that looks great but doesn't require any great skill in decorating. Ideas?

Mary

I find http://sweetapolita.com/ very inspiring. I wish I could do the ruffled cake on there but I am not that good at decorating.

CC's Strawberry Dream Cake is really delicious. No fancy decorating. Let me know if you want it and I will PM you the recipe.

The French Strawberry Cake in Baking with Julia is very good and simple to decorate. Recipe is on line.

I don't know about "girly," but this is one beautiful, lusciously delicious cake. I've made it many times. You can read the various reviewers' tips at the link, and I can also post my own tips if you think you may want to make this:
Mexican Chocolate Icebox Cake

You also can't go wrong with this one, Mary. It's not 'girly' but every girl I've ever fed it to has flipped over it. And it looks fancy (with or without the uneven circles ;) ) but is actually really easy. PM me if you'd like the recipe.

It's so funny you happened to post this today, Meryl. I was going thru my enormous stack of 'recipes to try' the other day and saw it. I couldn't remember where I got it from, but now I recall it was your recommendation. So I'm moving it to my 'recipes to try SOON' stack!

Those are inspiring AND int I dating, Becca. The blueberry lemon one looks doable though.
I did the strawberry cake for the last birthday for this same crew. It is a glorious thing but I don't want to repeat myself so soon.
The icebox cake looks great but I can't get sponge cake lady fingers. And none of you should even think about giving me a recipe to make them!

Ina Garten's Coconut Cake is divine, and not tricky to decorate.

Great! When you make it, let me know how it turns out!
