I've been asked to cater a "Film and Food" event next week. The (totally depressing) subject is Depression era films. It's a casual event and they want to serve something along the lines of a soup line. I immediately called my mother to ask for suggestions (even though she's not old enough to remember the Depression), but the first word out of her mouth was "beans". So, I immediately settled on Senate Navy Bean Soup. Now, I need to think of a vegetarian soup as well. Thoughts?

Cabbage soup?
And for your next job an homage to the plague?

Mary, I think "the Plague' would be the Spanish Flu empidemic? My grandfather died in that seige.....but he died in 1918, pre depression.

I was thinking bread. There were bread lines. I'll call Aunt Dorothy; she will be 101 on January 1, and she might know, but she spent time in Mexico to learn Spanish around then. I'll report back.

I googled soup 1930 and one of the first hits was this corned beef & cabbage soup.

Assuming that you're aiming for tasty-but-evocative, I like this because it has cabbage and potatoes (and as a plus includes canned meat!). Not sure I'd be expecting the corn & carrots, but there you are.

I've done some googling, and cabbage does seem to figure quite a bit. The problem I'm having with that, is that so many people do not like cabbage.

I'm thinking of some sort of potato/corn chowder, but with a kick. From what I've read, Depression era food sounded very boring.
