Now that fresh rhubarb is available I wanted to recommend This recipe. It is really special. I made it a couple days ago and it's the best recipe I've tried, the mixture of strawberries and rhubarb is just right; not too sweet and not too tart. And the thickener keeps it from being too runny. http://www.kingarthurflour.com/recipes/ ... ert-recipe |

Linda, Hmmm, not seeing much fresh rhubarb in the markets here (PNW). Do you grow your own? |

No, I don't grow anything other than few herbs. The fresh locally grown rhubarb has been available in some of my nearby stores for a couple weeks now. Odd that Portland wouldn't have any, surely some of you must like it. |

I think we had some earlier in the year. |

That would make sense since your climate is a bit ahead of ours here. Rhubarb is a bit of an old-fashioned product, probably more popular in the country. I just bought another couple of pounds yesterday and it's resting comfortably in the freezer...the season is pretty short. (Hey, I just learned that rhubarb is a vegetable and not a fruit.) |

My father loved stewed rhubarb with his breakfast. Anything he loved, I loved, too. Haven't had it in years. If City Market has any this weekend, I'll try it again. Can't be too hard. fitzie |

Our rhubarb went crazy this winter. I meant to harvest some and freeze it, but didn't. Now that I want it for strawberry/rhubarb hand pies, there are only a few skinny stems left and huge leaves. It is in a container which I think it has outgrown, so Steve is planning to find a place to put it in the ground. It will kill me to buy some. Anyway, if we ever get it back, I'll try the recipe. Thanks for the tip. |

Alina, if you can talk yourself into buying only a pound you would have enough to make this recipe when cut back by a third, which is what I did. I wanted only enough to fit into a 2 qt. Pyrex baking dish (which is more than enough for me). I used just under a pound each of strawberries and rhubarb. |
