It really depends on the pickle. Fried bad pickles are just bad pickles. Find a pickle you love and try it. With a good pickle these are good.

I had these recently at a restaurant in Minnesota. They were an appetizer thing, and were so good I wanted to order a second serving of them. They used a large thin slice of a dill pickle, something like the Clausen's ripple cut sandwich slices. Big slabs. They had a delicious light batter on them.

Loved them, really. Salty sour crunchy with those hot grease undertones!!

Which restaurant?

I'll ask Trinket and will report back. It was after a hockey game in a northernish suburb at a place that was sort of like tgi fridays, all the food was good. Apparently it is locally owned and there are several of these places in the cities.

I might try to make them this summer in our outdoor deep fryer. Last summer we mastered french fries and had fun with that. This summer we want to do more chicken - and maybe I can sneak some pickles in.

I like Becky's thought that you must start with a good pickle and it all falls into place.

I've eaten them in the south as well. I like them, but nothing to write home about.

I was reading French Revlolution, a food blog, today and found a recipe for fried cornichons that actually sounds pretty good.
