A friend of mine loves this old time candy, "Mallo Cups"...made in Altoona, PA...it consists of a chocolate cup filled with marshmallow, coconut and chocolate...there are several recipes on the internet...does anyone have an authentic recipe? Thanks!

The latest Baked Cookbook Explorations has a recipe, but it doesn't include the toasted Coconut in the Chocolate. You have to have the Coconut.

No recipe but my mom is from Altoona and we lived there for a while... long enough for a field trip to the factory. My cousin has a wholesale that specializes in "classic" candies so you could check them out too:

Oh my gosh what a fun link. Mallow Cups and Bonomo Turkish Taffy were FAVS!!!! :) And I've got the dental work to prove it.

Good luck on making them. We had some Russel Stover Coconut Creme easter eggs that actually reminded me of mallow cups over Easter.

Since I am not that familiar with this candy, I wanted to know how I would incorporate the toasted coconut....the recipe does not include coconut...seems like the original candy sprinkles coconut on the top of the marshmallow and then it is topped with chocolate? ...the recipe is basically a chocolate cup filled with marshmallow and topped with chocolate...Thanks for your help!

Lu,
I wonder if the coconut isn't added to the chocolate that encases the marshmallow...I might also use unsweetened coconut which has been whizzed in the fp to make it more finely chopped.

You make the chocolate cup, then fill it with soft marshmallow filling, then sprinkle toasted co nut on top. Once the filling has set a bit you cover the top with chocolate. If you look for recipes for peanut butter cups you can find some good hints on the techniques.

Becky, Nancy, thanks for you input...there are several recipes that add toasted unsweetened coconut into the chocolate shell...and other recipes top the marshmallow filling with coconut....I do want to replicate the real Mallo Cups made in Altoona, PA...which is correct? Thanks so much!
