I also agree about "the David." His ice cream book is excellent (and he's a really nice guy...took a class with him at SLT).

I no longer have it in my email archives but long story short, David Lebowitz had certain minimum standards if we were to be permitted to buy him lunch (if he would even accept lunch as opposed to dinner - I forget).

If you aren't part of the DL "inner circle", he no longer accepts requests for meals unless they are a 3-4 michelin star restaurant, and still no guaranteed approval.

PS - Please note that the way he presented this wasn't arrogant, at all. He explained that the blog, his appearances, chocolate tours, books etc had created so much attention that he had gotten overwhelmed with all such requests. This was his way of managing them.

What's the phrase? Once we start discussing price we've already established what kind of girl you are.

(Not you, per se...)

i.e., It would have been better for him simply to explain that he can't accept such invitations, full stop...
