I get the best asparagus from Costco though it only comes in three-pound packs.
What I bought recently was very good; I like the thicker stalks because they seem to me more flavorful.

The pipette-thin stalks are really nice *if* you can get them less than 2 days old. The problem with getting them from, say, Costco is that they dry out a lot faster.

Correct. It doesn't really cook per se; but raw asparagus shavings are perfectly edible. Provided the asparagus is good in the first place.

BTW, don't expect much of the California asparagus crop this year, for obvious reasons.

We bought some asparagus at the Italian Market in Philadelphia this weekend but I suspect it's from California (they don't bother with origin labeling there).
