I don't generally have beef stock on hand. Has anyone tried Penzeys Beef Base? Or suggestions for a low sodium one?

I keep Swanson's canned beef broth on hand for the occasional recipe that needs it; I use any leftovers to moisten my dogs' food, they love it.

Salt free beef stock (sometimes called beef cooking stock) is widely available these days. There are no chemicals.

I have better than bouilion in my fridge. I use it on occasion for pot roast and have not noticed it being salty even when reduced. I add it to homemade no salt chicken stock when making pot roast.

I rarely need beef broth so just keep a box of Swanson's in the pantry and then freeze the leftover in ice trays. But the cubes usually get freezer burn before I need any again. So what a great idea as far as the dog chow, Linda. Max and Biscuit say thanks! :D

Alina,

I haven't tried the beef base for obvious reasons, but Penzey's vegetable base should be avoided.

Fuzzy,
Have you tried Penzeys' clam base and/or Seafood base?
Just curious since I have some in my fridge to use for my Fish stew recipes.

Edited to add: Actually, those may not be Penzeys' products but might be Better than Bouillon.

Rachael Ray's beef stock is quite good.

I have some Penzey's Beef Soup Base in by fridge. I don't use it a lot, but it is probably as good as or better than most commercial stocks, broths and bases out there. At least the first ingredient is "cooked beef'.

Is it worth more than twice as much as Better Than Bouillon? I decided that it wasn't when it came to Chicken Base but I have not made a side by side taste comparison with the beef so I cannot judge.

I frequently use half chicken stock when beef stock is called for and the boxed stock [quarts] I have been using lately is Aldi's Fit & Active® Reduced Sodium Chicken Broth. 570 mg of sodium per cup and @$1.49 it is half the price of many better known brands without being twice as disgusting. Lends itself to enhancement pretty well.

I have not had the opportunity to test Aldi's Beef Broth.
