Things that are fast and easy, and you can easily make ahead as filler: bocconcini / grape tomato skewers, savory shortbread, deviled eggs, cheese platter, cookies, fudge, mulled cider... I need to do the same thing on the same timeline so I have been thinking of what I can make on Sunday night for Monday when we are having folks, considering I work on Monday. I should have just enough time change my shoes and to set the table before folks show up. :)

Good luck!

I have no idea how many people were here last night, but we skipped the calamari and went with cooked shrimp that was in the freezer, and I'm glad I wasn't trying to fry with everyone there.
I also did a ham (the precooked kind you just reheat) and served it sliced with bread on the side for sandwiches and had a veggie platter. The brie was mainly gone, the soup about half, and the goat cheese was untouched as were the cheese shortbreads which I found odd. I wound up also making puff pastry sausage rolls which were a big hit. My friends didn't know you could make them yourself.
A great night with friends although it was a lot of different worlds colliding so I spent a fair bit of time just making sure everyone was talking to each other.

I wouldn't risk it either. Squid are fussy. You can dredge them before and keep them in the fridge.

I did this last night and made 2 pounds of rings for 8 people.....they could have eaten more. Thanks for the suggestion, I will do this next time as well. I put them on a rack over a tray and they kept for about 40 minutes in the fridge, the last of the batch were getting a bit gluey so I likely wouldn't do it much more ahead than that but it was great to have them ready to go. I put the water for pasta for dinner to boil while I fried the calamari and we finished them all off by the time I tossed the pasta in the water so the timing was good.
