Bump.

An 'anti-tip': Do not put your hand over the vent on a rice cooker to see if it is running.

And on a related note. Don't use a knit cut resistant glove as a pot holder. The matrix of tiny second degree burns is remarkably painful.

When using a microplane zester I always hold the fruit still and run the zester over the top. You can see what you are doing and the zest fills up the channel of the zester. I thought everyone did it this way, but apparently CI's illustrator runs the fruit over the zester.

Don't know it these counts as tips, but 2 things I do are 1. use an 8 cup measuring cup instead of a bowl. The handle makes it easier to hold while stirring and you have a ready spout to pour onto pans. I also use melt whatever I need in it first then add the rest to that. I find that that works as well for most recipes as the opposite.

2nd tip is that I put a paper towel under one end of my cutting board when peeling garlic or slicing veggies. I push the discards away onto the paper towel, leaving more room to mince, dice, etc.

I don't have an 8-cup measure, but I do have a spouted mixing bowl of a similar size. It's one of my favorite things.

They do? That sounds like a good way to take off your fingertips.

Although: I hold the zester still and move the nutmeg when grating nutmeg. It really doesn't work the other way.

Tip: when making savory fritters, cakes (like crab cakes), or similar fried batter foods which ask for minced onion, consider grating the onion on a box grater instead. Grated onion incorporates better without losing any flavor.

Pete,

The "drill holes" one would become rather undesirable if your garbage bag leaked.

I like the pants hanger idea but that would be too flimsy for most of my cookbooks. (Off to rummage through the industrial binders...)
