All,

We recently bought a Roku and installed it so that we could watch Dr. Who. The device comes with access to a truly bewildering number of online streaming media sources. Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Blip.tv, etc.

Are there any cooking shows available via streaming media I should know about? Which services are they on?

I was really hoping something would turn up here, particularly on Netflix.

Hubby does most of the shopping for shows on NF, so I've not studied it in detail. On a quick search last week, all I found was Food Inc and a Zen of Food thing about a food centric Zen retreat. The Food Inc thing is sort of an old message (not that it is not important) and the Zen thing, well...I'll let you make up your own mind on that. To me it was a bunch of hokey schmokey and my husband could not tolerate it it for more than 10 minutes.

Surely there must be more out there.

Two words: Bit Torrent ... providing you have reasonably good anti-virus and stay away from downloading executable files (files with extensions like exe, com, pif, bat, and so forth) you can get quite a bit of stuff via torrent files. I use uTorrent, free software, and then hunt for torrent sites via Google or similar sites to find files. PirateBay is a popular torrent tracking site. Yes, like the name implies some are pirate. I am a bit of a Jolly Roger. I have found a few BBC cooking shows, Hell's Kitchen (okay, not cooking - more entertainment, but I like Ramsey) But Jamie Oliver episodes are often available, Rick Bayless, Bobby Flay, and so forth. Cookbooks in pdf format often show up. I am downloading Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking as I post this.

The frustrating part for those of us that indulge in torrent downloads, is that if there are not "seeders" then even though the program or file is listed, you cannot download it. So you just have to take your chances, hope that there is at least one or more individuals with the file on their computer and available. I am something of a Japanese animation freak and I enjoy foreign movies, so with many not in release where I live (in the Philippines) torrents have become a primary resource for entertainment along with many educational programs and books for my family.

The nice thing about torrents is that it doesn't matter if you lose power or your internet goes down for a bit. Unlike most HTML based downloads, torrents come in itty bitty bits. The first file you download is a tracking file that keeps tabs on the bits. So if your system goes down, the various senders go down, the internet is off, whatever ... you don't lose all your previous download and have to start over. It is there and you start from where you were when things stopped. Very nice for us impatient types.

Tatoosh,

Really, I don't mind paying $0.99 for a show. I figure they need to make money somehow.

And I don't want to open up my firewall for a torrent server/client.

Oh, I am with you in terms of paying a reasonable fee, that doesn't bother me at all. But occasionally when I try to access p4v stuff, my IP in the Philippines seems to make them refuse my purchase. I tried to purchase a number of the Nancy Drew books in pdf form for a young in-law and the publisher said they will not sell those files to anyone in my area. So it goes. And I am not so jolly when the price escalates (as some content providers like to do) for a short term use item or limited use movie though. When faced with a refusal to sell or unavailability of a product, I do what is necessary. ;)

I do understand the security aspect of opening a breech in your firewall.

Tatoosh,

Yeah, everything's pretty much available here. Different from there.

Well, not that I got many cooking shows in any case, but I just cut the cord, so I guess I'll be looking too. Unfortunately Roku is unavailable/minimally available here, but I don't mind running a torrent client on my Firewall to download, you know, Unbuntu ISO's. I do see a sharp increase in our iTunes bill coming.
